This glass is most often used to serve high-proof mixed drinks on ice. There's not much more to say about its shape – it's simple, fits well in the hand, and has plenty of room for ice. It owes its name to the classic Old Fashioned cocktail, which became popular in such glasses.

Of the two Old Fashioned glasses, the Double Old Fashioned glass is the larger one. This glass is used for many drinks that are served on ice and have too much liquid for the Single Old Fashioned glass.

To some extent, it's a matter of taste whether a drink with a lot of liquid served on ice should end up in a Double Old Fashioned glass or a longdrink glass. However, the longdrink glass is clearly more suitable for all drinks with carbonated ingredients, for example tonic water or soda.

Uncommon, but useful: Small longdrink glasses are somewhere between large longdrink glasses and small tumblers in terms of function. This makes them remarkably versatile and the ideal choice
for sparkling cocktails with less fill volume, spirits served on ice, and juice or water.

The cocktail glass is used for drinks with a small amount of liquid, which are served without ice. Since the famous Martini cocktail is served in a cocktail glass, this design is also called a martini glass.
